What Makes a Labubu Rare

Four factors drive value:

1. Production Numbers

  • Prototypes: 1-15 pieces
  • Event exclusives: 100-500 pieces
  • Limited editions: 2,000-6,000 pieces
  • Secret figures: 1:72 ratio (~1.4% of boxes)

2. Collaboration Status Designer or celebrity partnerships (Sacai, Pronounce, Vans, SEVENTEEN) create instant collector demand.

3. Regional Exclusivity Some releases never leave their origin country:

  • Thailand-only "Good Luck to You"
  • China-only "Forest Fairy Tale"
  • Singapore-only "Hide and Seek"

4. Discontinued Status Once a series ends, supply freezes. Early core editions like Jump for Joy started at $60, now hit $1,000.

How to Spot Fakes

At these prices, counterfeits are everywhere. Check:

  1. Tooth count — Real Labubu has exactly 9 teeth
  2. QR code — Scan with POP MART app for verification
  3. UV stamp — Newer releases have invisible stamps on the right foot
  4. Material quality — Real plush is soft and even; fakes feel synthetic
  5. Packaging fonts — Counterfeits often have slightly wrong typography

The Reality Check

Most collectors will never own a $100,000+ Labubu. That's fine. The market is structured in tiers:

  • Entry level: Secret figures at $150-$300
  • Mid-tier: Discontinued core editions at $500-$1,500
  • High-end: Event exclusives and collabs at $1,500-$10,000
  • Auction pieces: Prototypes and one-of-a-kinds at $10,000+

The 1.2-meter mint green Labubu that sold for $170,000 was a prototype. Prototypes exist outside the normal market. For 99% of collectors, the realistic ceiling is around $3,000-$5,000 for the rarest obtainable pieces.

Focus on what you can actually find. A complete Exciting Macaron set with the Chestnut Cocoa secret is more achievable than chasing auction pieces—and still makes a solid collection.
